4 Dead, Many Critical In Huge Fire As Gas Tanker Crashes Into Vehicles On Jaipur-Ajmer Highway
A chemical-laden truck collided with other vehicles on the Jaipur-Ajmer highway, causing a massive fire. At least four people died, while many others were injured in the incident.
At least four people died, while many others sustained burn injuries after a truck collided with several other vehicles and caught fire on Friday morning. Many other vehicles were also gutted.
The incident happened on the Jaipur-Ajmer highway in front of a petrol pump.
According to preliminary information, the truck that hit the other vehicles was loaded with a chemical, news agency PTI reported.
“The fire has engulfed several trucks. The number of trucks involved in the incident is not clear. Some people with burn injuries have been rushed to hospitals in ambulances," PTI quoted Station House Officer (SHO), Bhankrota, Manish Gupta as saying.
A video shared on social media showed chaos on the street and many vehicles burnt.
Speaking to the media, Jaipur District Magistrate (DM), Jitendra Soni said, “Four people have died in the incident. Around 40 vehicles caught fire. Fire brigade and ambulances have reached the spot and relief work is underway."
“The fire has been doused off from most of the vehicles. Around 24 people have been injured in the incident," he said.
Also speaking to reporters, SMS Medical College Principal, Dr Deepak Maheshwari said, “Four people have died in the incident. Nearly 25 others have been admitted to the ICU. More people are coming. Many people have been injured in the incident."
Commenting on the incident, Rajasthan Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar said, “Around five beds are left in our critical burn ward. We have prepared another ward of 40 beds. The police team and administration team are active there. The traffic corridor has been completely opened for the injured people to be shifted to SMS Hospital."
“According to the police and administration, maximum people have already reached the hospital. The blast in the LPG container was massive. We are not sure if the petrol pump caught the fire or not," he added.
The traffic on the highway was suspended.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma took stock of the situation and also visited the SMS Hospital to meet those injured in the incident.
Later, in an X post, the Chief Minister wrote that emergency services were working at the site of the accident.
“I am deeply saddened to hear the sad news of casualties of citizens in the gas tanker fire incident on Jaipur-Ajmer National Highway. As soon as the information about the incident was received, I went to SMS Hospital and directed the doctors to provide immediate necessary medical facilities and take proper care of the injured," a rough translation of the Chief Minister’s post in Hindi read.
“Rescue work by the administration is continuing. The local administration and emergency services are working with full readiness. I pray to the Lord to grant the departed souls a place in his supreme abode, give the bereaved families strength to bear this immense loss and provide speedy recovery to the injured," the post read.
